I have to go back to town today after 7 days here at the ranch. I move one the rocking chairs into a sunny spot on the deck. There’s a gentle breeze from the north and the wind chime is ringing softly. I hear an occasional low moo from the cattle across the river. The sky is bright blue with a few high whispy clouds to the South.

Peaches joins me on the deck and immediately starts grooming. A few minutes later Gabby comes up and jumps into my lap. I know now why Peaches’ coat is silkier than Gabby’s. While Gabby snuggles in and enjoys the comfort of my lap, Peaches is constantly grooming.

A few cardinals perch in the nearby tree and swoop over one by one to the feeder. The longer I sit the more birds appear. More cardinals … male and female, chicadees, goldfinches in their winter plumage, grey titmouse, and a small round bird with brown wings and a red head and breast. I’d love to get a picture to send to my birdwatching friend to help me identify it, but if I move it will spoil the moment … warm purring kitty curled up on my lap … flocks of birds taking their turns at the feeder… the flutter of wings, wind chimes and occasional mooing the only sounds …

Peace …
